Statewide Adolescent Coordination Project

State Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Coordination grant program is one of SAMHSA's Infrastructure Grant programs. The purpose of State Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Coordination grants is to build capacity in states to provide effective, accessible, and affordable substance abuse treatment for youth and their families. Grants will provide funding to support a staff position (a state official whose sole responsibility is ensuring the effectiveness of adolscent substance abuse treatment state-wide) and a state process to assess, facilitate, and ccordinate ongoing, self-sustaining cross-system planning for effective adolescent substance abuse treatment.

ODADAS Receives Adolescent Project Grant: On August 1, 2005, the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS), was awarded a three year, $1.2 million grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. The Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Coordination Project’s purpose is to build capacity in States to provide effective, accessible, and affordable substance abuse treatment for youth and their families. As part of the project, ODADAS has contracted with Ohio Citizen Advocates, Ohio Resource Network, and the University of Akron to assist in identifying system barriers to treatment. The primary focus during the first year of the project is to develop three (3) surveys to examine system gaps and provide a system map that illustrates the gaps in Ohio. The surveys will collect detailed information that will ultimately produce a statewide directory for adolescent services. In addition, ODADAS has moved the existing Adolescent workgroup to the role of Adolescent Advisory Network and expanded the membership to include a broader representation of public and private, state and local agencies, associations, providers and family members, all with a shared interest in fostering a continuum of effective alcohol and other drug prevention and treatment services for adolescents in Ohio.

The Statewide Adolescent Work Group was formed several years ago in response to a growing need for a coordinated system of care for adolescent-specific prevention and treatment services. Most recently, the Work Group, now the Statewide Adolescent Network, was expanded to include a broader representation of public and private, state and local agencies, associations, providers and family members all with a shared interest in fostering a continuum of efficient and effective alcohol and other drug prevention and treatment services for adolescents. The primary focus of the network is to assist in the development of a statewide adolescent prevention and treatment infrastructure building on existing statewide collaborative partnerships on behalf of adolescents and their families.
